Where is your office?
My office is located at the following address:
422 E. Vermijo Ave, Ste. 210Colorado Springs, CO 80903
What are your office hours?
My hours are Monday through Thursday—by appointment.
Where do I park?
Parking for the building is free. Just park in the front lot.
Is your office handicapped-accessible?
Yes. The building is ADA-compliant. I am located on the second floor, and we have an elevator for you to use.
Do you accept insurance?
I do not accept insurance.
I find that many issues for which clients come into therapy are not paid for by insurance.
I prefer to offer clients what is best for them rather than be directed by insurance companies with diagnosis and session limitations.
Do you have a sliding scale?
Yes. However, this is offered on a limited basis for clients who qualify.
Do you offer treatment packages?
Yes, I offer initial bundles and packages.
These include sessions or, sometimes, books that I encourage clients to read for their particular situation.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes, I require 24 hours’ notice for any cancellation.
With whom do you work?
I work with adult individual men and women, LGBTQ, and couples.
How long will I be in therapy?
It depends. As mentioned above, since I do not accept insurance, we are not limited by their requirements.
Each individual and couple is different and requires varying intensities of therapy.
In addition, you can terminate therapy anytime you wish.
I frequently discuss the treatment process with you and will check in to re-evaluate if we are on the right path for you.
Do I have to tell you everything?
You don’t have to tell me everything or every detail. In fact, frequently it is actually unhelpful to get lost in the details.
I want to focus on your emotions, your interpretations of events, and your experiences.
Do you prescribe medications?
No. I will collaborate with you doctor if you would like after you sign a release of information.
What is EMDR?
EMDR is a modality of therapy. It stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
It was initially used with soldiers who suffered with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
We now know through decades of research that this modality is beneficial for people not only with PTSD, but also with anxiety, relational issues, abuse history, life transitions, and more.
It is a way to help people reprocess and limit the impact of disturbing experiences. I have found it to be incredibly useful and have witnessed amazing recovery and healing using EMDR.
In order to use EMDR, therapists are required to attend lengthy trainings and supervision.
What is Discernment Counseling?
Discernment Counseling is for couples who are on the brink of divorce but have not fully decided to take that next step.
I help clients decide which of three paths they want to take (stay the same, divorce, or couples therapy).
Discernment Counseling generally takes between 1-5 sessions, which are generally longer than typical sessions and with a different format.
How will we get started?
Both individuals and couples can expect one initial intake appointment.
For individuals, this allows me to get to know you, your circumstances, personal history, etc.
For couples, the intake permits me the opportunity to get to know you, gain an understanding of the negative relational patterns, and begin to understand the outcomes you would like.
Intake appointments generally last 60 minutes.
How long are your therapy sessions?
For couples, following this joint intake session, I will then see each partner individually for a 45-minute session.
This is followed by a joint session again. (These appointments are not on the same day, so don’t worry! You won’t be spending all day with me.)
All of these follow-up sessions—for both individuals and couples—are 45 minutes.
In special circumstances, sessions may last longer for an additional fee. We will mutually decide if this would be appropriate.
May I have a cookie?
Yes! I enjoy baking and will often bring cookies for my jar. While you’re at it, have a cup of coffee, too.
Do you actually read all those books?
Yes, I have read them all…
… and there are several that I have read multiple times to refresh myself.
I could be a life-long student, and I think I am. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in family therapy, and I am on the long road to earning a Ph.D.
How long have you been married and do you have children?
I am married. At the time of this writing, I have been married for over 21 years.
We have one son and multiple fur babies.
What’s with the hair on your clothes?
As mentioned above, I have fur babies.
I usually roll my clothes with sticky paper before leaving for the office; plus, I keep a roller in the office.
Sometimes I miss. I’m ok with it. My love for them is greater than my embarrassment.
I saw you at the restaurant the other night. Why didn’t you come over to say “hi”?
For your confidentiality, I do not approach clients in public.
Will I be comfortable?
I think so. I have made every effort to ensure client comfort.
This extends to coffee and cookie availability to lotion-infused tissues.
I invite clients to curl up on the sofa or sit as they like. I’ve had multiple sessions sitting on the floor cross-legged with clients who prefer a more relaxed setting.
I have candles going and pleasing sound machines in the background.
We do not have to be formal in my office.
